Happy Valentine’s Day

Mostly True Memoirs

Valentine's Day

I have failed, once again, in my lifelong quest to never make cute food again.

It’s always a disaster.

This time I tried to make Valentine heart cookies.

They looked cute before they were baked.

But they puffed up in the oven.

And came out looking rather eczematous.

I wasn’t sure if they needed frosting or cortisone cream.

Well they turned out tasty even if they weren’t pretty.

And I will continue my quest to avoid making cute food.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

A Big Storm is Moving In

Mostly True Memoirs

A Big Storm

A big storm is moving in.

My dog is pacing nervously.

I already know how the rest of my day is going to proceed.

She is going to sit in my lap, fearful, while I try to work on my keyboard around the trembling.

Yep, we’ve been down this road before.

My girl does not like thunderstorms.

She Is a Very Angry Woman

Mostly True Memoirs

Very Angry

Today my English students talked about phobias.

Spiders.

Snakes.

Lightening.

The dark.

In every class, the students seemed to have similar fears.

Except for one man.

He stated that he is afraid of his wife.

She is a very angry woman.

To alleviate his fear, he drinks a lot of beer.

Well.

That escalated quickly.

It Froze Overnight

Mostly True Memoirs

It Froze

It froze overnight.

Not in a picturesque, Christmas-card sort of way.

Just in a very cold way.

The Grown Son lives farther north.

He got a good snowfall.

Not enough to make a snowman, though.

He was only able to make a very small snow mutant.

This concludes the winter of 2020.

I’m ready for spring.

The Weather App is Drunk

The Weather App Is Drunk

At 6:00 this morning, the weather app said that it was clear.

However, it was pouring rain at the time.

The app also said that we might get some snow later in the day.

However, it also said that we will be at 37 all afternoon, which is too warm for snow.

I think the weather app is drunk.

Go home, weather app.

Sleep it off.

Try again tomorrow.

Happy Birthday to You

Happy Birthday To You

On this day, February 4, I became a mama.

My baby boy is now a grown man.

He inspires me every day with his determination.

And his work ethic.

And his quirky, subversive sense of humor.

I was a little worried on the day he was born.

I don’t know anything about sports.  Or cars.

How am I going to raise a boy?

All these years later, I still don’t know anything about cars.

But this boy has turned me into a Super Fan.

Happy birthday to you, Kiddo.

I’m proud to be your mama.

On This Day in History

On This Day

On this day in history…

On January 29, 1845, The Raven was first published.

It’s my favorite Poe story.

Quoth The Raven, “Nevermore.”

No Lives Were Lost

On the same day that my car wouldn’t start.

My coffee maker died.

This could have been a tragedy.

But my mother taught me some useful household skills.

I don’t need no stinkin’ coffee maker.

I made a pot of coffee on the stovetop.

And then called a tow truck.

No lives were lost.

Because coffee.

Every Now and Then

Mostly True Memoirs

Every Now and Then

I love my Grown Sons.

I love them more than life itself.

They are my pride and joy.

My reason for living.

But every now and then…

Every now and then I’d like to punch them in the throat.

He Was Only Hangry

Mostly True Memoirs

Hangry

The Grown Son was hangry.

He complained bitterly that there was no food in the house.

And he was starving.

I corrected him.

There is plenty of food in the house.

It’s just not ready to eat.

It’s in the form of ingredients.

And it needs to be cooked.

He’s moving out to his own apartment this week.

He is going to starve.
