I was teaching an online grammar lesson to a group of middle school boys.
We were talking about abbreviations.
I gave the example of Mr. and Mrs. and Dr.
One kid asked, “Why are so many streets named ‘doctor’?”
I didn’t laugh.
I never laugh at any student.
I explained that context is key.
Dr. could mean doctor, or it could mean Drive.
We discussed various street abbreviations such as Ave., Ln., Rd., or Blvd.
“My whole life, I thought we lived on ‘doctor’ street!”
He was so shocked at his newfound knowledge that the whole class started laughing.
I heard his dad laughing in the background.
The kid was laughing too, otherwise I would have put a stop to it.
I would never want to embarrass a student.
This kid was enjoying his moment in the limelight.
He was already working up a great story that he’ll no doubt be telling for the rest of his life.
This is an exclusive insight into the importance of grammar.
