Neglect Turned Out To Be The Key To Success!

Neglect Equals Success!

I have this rogue tomato plant that decided to bloom at the end of summer.

Before I left for vacation, I enjoyed plenty of delicious, sun-warmed produce and figured the rest would ripen and die off from neglect before I got back.

But I was wrong.

Apparently, late-season tomatoes take their sweet time to ripen.

When I returned home after more than a week of neglect, that scrappy little plant had gone wild.

I had a massive harvest waiting for me.

Oh my gosh – what am I supposed to do with all of these tomatoes?

I decided to try oven-drying a small batch, just to see what would happen.

It worked.

Oh. My. Gosh.

They were incredible – savory, tangy, chewy little bursts of joy.

I was going to freeze the extras, but they’re so delicious that there might not be any extra left to freeze.

And the best part? I still have a ton of green ones waiting to ripen.

I am in tomato heaven.

I didn’t plan to become a tomato farmer, but here we are.

What about you?

Have you ever had a plant surprise you like that?

Is Texting A Skill Killer Or A Learning Tool?

Is Texting Ruining Our Writing Skills? Let’s Talk About It.

As an English teacher, I hear this a lot: “Is texting ruining students’ writing?”

Honestly? No, it’s not. But we do need to talk about the difference between texting and formal writing.

Texting is casual. It’s meant to be quick, and it’s often a little messy. You might text a friend,

“omg I’m sooo tired lol can’t even think rn 🥱”

and that’s totally fine.

That kind of writing fits the moment. It’s relaxed, it’s personal, and it’s fun.

No one cares about punctuation, sentence structure, or spelling.

But that same message doesn’t belong in a business message.

Imagine sending this text if you had to reschedule a business appointment:

not feeling it rn lol too tired, maybe 2moro?”

Yikes. That’s where things get tricky.

Here’s the good news:

We are all smart enough to code-switch. The trick is to think carefully before you hit ‘send.’ We do it all the time in real life. We speak differently to our best friend than we would to a client or an acquaintance.

Instead of blaming texting for bad writing, let’s consider it a learning opportunity.

Remember that texting is one writing style, and academic or professional writing is another.

Texting is not the enemy.

It’s just a different tool.

I noticed, recently, that in my classes, my chat box was filling up with terribly-written messages. I have started playing a daily game called, “Write or Text” where the students will send me a message in the chat box based on whichever style I have requested. They have all, from middle schoolers to adults, caught on beautifully.

Let’s simply be mindful about when to be casual and when to be professional. We can do it.

The Saga Continues – It’s The Gift That Keeps On Giving

The Saga Continues

The saga continues.

That tow truck driver still sucks.

He’s the gift that keeps on giving.

Our accident occurred on a weekend, so the car was taken to a holding yard.

Now it has to be towed to the body shop.

Since we already filed the claim, our insurance company had their contracted roadside assistance company go and get the car.

That would be the same company that never showed up when we called them.

And guess what?

They never showed up to pick up the car.

It’s still in the holding yard, waiting to be picked up.

The claims department agreed that we could use the tow truck guy that actually helped us.

I’d rather that he gets the business.

He was helpful and considerate and prompt.

Which just goes to show that the old adage is true.

90% of success is just showing up.
