It Snowed, And Now We’re In A Winter Wonderland

It Snowed, and Now We're In A Winter Wonderland

It snowed, it snowed, it snowed!

Everyone is always so surprised when it snows here in North Texas.

But why should they be surprised?

It snows every year.

This was a gentle snowstorm with several inches of lovely white powder.

It’s a beautiful, powdery, winter wonderland.

Blue is in doggy heaven.

She has had the perpetual zoomies, running and jumping and romping in the snow.

With her curly hair, the snow clumps all over her body, and it won’t rub off with a towel.

I have to hair-dry her to melt the ice clumps off.

She does not appreciate the hair dryer.

But she does appreciate the iciclectomies.

I have enjoyed wearing boots and mittens and sweaters for the past couple of days.

But now the storm is over.

The weather will warm up over the weekend, and the snow will quickly melt away.

I’m fine with that.

I’ve had my fill of winter.

This Southern California girl can only take so much of the winter wonderland thing.

I’m ready for spring.

Valuable Life Lessons From The Dog

Life Lessons From The Dog

Life lessons are everywhere, if only you can find them.

I never get sick.

Well, actually, I do get sick occasionally.

But there’s not much that a hot shower and a good night’s sleep can’t cure.

However, I’ve been hit with a cold this week.

A bad one.

It’s settled in my chest, and I’ve had a terrible cough.

I haven’t been this sick in years.

The cute thing about it (and yes, there IS a cute thing about it) is that Blue Dawg is very worried.

Every time I have a coughing fit, she rushes over and fusses around me until I stop.

She is showing me much more concern than my human family who state, every time that I cough, that I sound terrible.

They’re not wrong.

But they’re not helpful.

Although, now that I think about it, Blue might actually be saying the same thing.

In her own doggy way.

Maybe she’s not being helpful either.

But she’s cute, so there’s that.

My family could learn some valuable life lessons from the dog.

If you can’t be helpful, at least be cute.

Do You Love Black Dogs? Today’s Their Day!

Love black dogs?

I love black dogs!

October 1 is National Black Dog Day.

I never knew there was such a thing.

How could I have not known?

Blue is a black dog.

I should have been informed.

A few years ago, when we had Wrigley, I would not have celebrated Black Dog Day.

I would have celebrated Gray Dog Day.

Aww, Wrigley was the Best Dog Ever.

But now Blue is the Best Dog Ever.

And today is her day.

We’ll celebrate with a round of fetch in the backyard followed by a treat.

That’s actually no different than any other day.

I guess that means that every day is National Black Dog Day.

Yeah, I can live with that.

It’s A Miracle – I Took A Good Photo!

A Good Photo

Happy National Dog Day!

I have never, ever, ever taken a a good photo of Blue.

She’s all black, and she’s curly.

Most of my pictures are a dark, blobby swirl.

However, I got a great shot today.

Why?

Because I followed my friend Michelle Debenport’s photography advice!

I fooled around with the lighting settings on my phone.

I fooled around with the F-stop settings on my phone.

And, very importantly, I MOVED MY FEET and found a great perspective.

Not only that, I practiced selective sharing, which Michelle says is the easiest way to improve your photography.

I took lots and lots and lots of pics to get this one good one.

There are a whole lot of terrible shots on my phone, and several decent ones, and this one.

Selective sharing – it works!

The only thing I don’t like about this pic, which you wouldn’t even know about if you don’t know Blue, is that she’s annoyed.

She usually has a happy smile on her face, and her ears are always perked up and eager.

But she didn’t want to sit and stay with my phone in her face.

If you didn’t know her, though, you probably wouldn’t even notice that ‘tude.

Thanks, Michelle, for your amazing photography advice.

It’s a miracle – I took a good photo!

The Doggy Door Is Now Closed For Good

Doggy door

Blue is black.

Our sofas are black.

Quite often, we lose Blue in plain sight.

Sometimes we’re frantically looking for her, worried that she has gotten out of the yard.

She just watches us, amused, from her invisible perch.

That thumping, happy tail is what gives her location away.

The TV remote is also black.

It also gets lost in plain sight.

We have to frisk the couch, like they do to bad guys on cop shows, to find the remote.

So you can imagine that I was upset when I came home the other day to find Bob on one end of the house and the dog in the back yard, with the doggy door opened.

I had already declared the doggy door off limits since Blue brought in that dead rabbit.

Can you imagine sitting down and reaching around to move that lumpy thing from underneath yourself, thinking it’s a dog toy or the TV remote, only to find yourself elbow deep in a mangy dead rabbit?

Gaaaahhhhh!

Bob had the nerve to laugh.

And protest, because he thinks the doggy door is so convenient.

Too bad.

One dead rabbit in the house is more dead critters than I can tolerate.

So you can image that I was REALLY upset to come in to the house the next day to find Bob napping on the couch, and the doggy door open.

“But she had to go out,” he protested.

We had three dogs before Blue who did not have a doggy door.

We can manage without it.

I closed up the doggy door and sealed it with a much-more-than-necessary amount of blue painter tape.

Yes, I was sending a message.

Bob thought the entire episode was hilarious.

Until he went outside to do some yard work.

Blue immediately killed a rabbit.

And while Bob was cleaning that mess up, she killed another one.

Seriously, the rabbits kind of deserve it by now.

At this point, they should have warned each other not to come into our yard.

The doggy door is officially out of commission.

Those black couches mysteriously hide all sorts of secrets.

But I’m not about to let a bloody bunny carcass be one of those secrets.

The doggy door stays closed.

I’ve Been Traumatized, But My Dog Is Happy

I've Been Traumatized

I’ve been traumatized.

It finally happened.

I’ve worried about this for ages.

All the what-ifs have been giving me nightmares.

I’ve told myself that I’m just being silly.

I’m overthinking this thing.

It’s never really going to happen.

But it did.

It happened.

Blue brought a dead rabbit into the house through the doggy door.

She. Brought. In. A. Dead. Rabbit.

I caught her when she was just about to hop onto the couch with it.

In a panic, I did the only thing I could think of.

I screamed.

Surprised, she dropped the rabbit on the floor.

Who, as it turns out, wasn’t actually dead.

So she picked it up and gave it a good hard shake to finish the job.

Oh. My. God.

No one else was at home.

I was forced into a one-person Cri-Man-Squa.

That’s a Michael Scott reference if you aren’t an Office fan.

There were no other options.

I got a dustpan and a broom to deal with the carcass.

Luckily, there was no blood.

And luckier still, it was on the floor and not on the furniture.

I would have had to burn the couch.

I got the dead body into a trash bag while continuously moaning and ewwwing and flinching.

It was horrifying.

I had to sanitize the spot on the floor.

All while being completely grossed out with the heebie jeebies.

I texted my family to inform them of the crisis.

Every one of them thought it was hilarious.

For the record, it was not hilarious.

I have PTDRS.

Blue is never, ever, ever using that doggy door again.

From now on, she is going to have to wait at the back door and pass muster before she’ll be allowed back in the house.

Blue Dawg couldn’t care less.

She’s happy and sassy and very, very, very proud of herself.

I, on the other hand, have been traumatized.

I Love Dogs, But Three Is Too Many Dogs

Too Many Dogs

Three dogs is too many dogs.

I dog sat.

For two pups.

Including my Blue, there were three dogs in the house.

For days and days and days.

Oh. My. God.

That’s too many dogs.

At any given moment of any given day, one wanted in, one wanted out, one was barking, one was digging, one was chewing, one was jumping, and two were picking on the other one.

I got nothing done all week.

It felt like the old days with all the neighborhood kids running in and out of the house.

I definitely had a lot more tolerance for chaos back in the day.

Now that the boys are grown, I’ve become accustomed to a quiet and orderly routine.

Although Blue enjoyed the company, as soon as her playmates went home, she melted into the kitchen floor and slept soundly for several hours.

It’s confirmed.

I’m an only-dog household.

Stupid Bunnies, They Really Should Know Better

Stupid bunnies

Stupid bunnies.

You’d think they would post some kind of community notification.

They ought to warn all the other bunnies to stay out of our yard.

We have a killer on the premises.

But no.

They keep on coming.

And Blue keeps on killing them.

We’re up to three this week.

Now don’t get me wrong.

I hate rabbits.

They’re evil, destructive little fluffers.

I’m happy to have the dog chase them away.

But I’m not thrilled with the killing.

It’s gross.

Depending on where we are in the trash pick-up cycle, it can get pretty stinky.

It’s only going to get stinkier as the weather gets hotter.

At our old house, we lived next to a greenbelt.

We would just shovel dead stuff over the fence and the buzzards would take care of it.

Here, though, the neighbors might object if we flung dead stuff into their yards.

Maybe I should put a bell on Blue’s collar.

It might give the rabbits a bit of a head start.

Stupid bunnies.

Why I’ll Gladly Ride The Pine From Now On

They say that worrying is a foolish waste of time.

Unless, of course, the thing that worries you actually happens.

My worry has finally seen the light.

Our early morning dog park group has a couple of herding dogs.

These beasties love to chase the rest of the pups.

Who thoroughly enjoy the game.

They run like demons possessed.

It’s a good time.

For them.

I’m always worried that they’re going to take out my bad knee.

I usually sit on a bench or stand by the fence when they’re zooming.

This time, however, I was talking to the other humans and not paying attention to the dogs.

I should have been paying attention.

The entire herd zoomed right into me.

I went airborne and landed on my keester.

My bad knee was fine.

But my ankle was mangled.

Actually, it’s not even my ankle.

It’s the top of my foot.

I think I twisted a muscle.

It’s much better than it was, although it is still swollen and sore.

Luckily, it’s raining today, and it’s predicted to rain for several more days.

It’s too wet for the dog park, even if my feet were fine.

This storm will give me time to rest and heal.

I guess it’s true though, that the worrying was a foolish waste of time.

I worried, and the thing happened anyway.

Next time, I’ll ride the pine.

The Dog Park – We Go Every Morning

The Dog Park

Several weeks ago, when Bob reseeded the back yard, I started taking Blue around the corner to our neighborhood dog park.

We wanted to keep her off the lawn.

Blue loves the dog park.

She’s made a BFF named Rosie.

Rosie is a herding dog.

And Blue seems to enjoy being herded.

It works out well.

We’ve been having lovely spring afternoons, but the nights can still get cold.

This morning it was only 44⁰ outside.

“We’ll go to the park this afternoon when it’s 70⁰,” I promised the dog, opening the back door to let her out in the yard.

Blue was having none of that.

She refused to go outside.

I’ve created a monster.

So I bundled up and took her to the park.

It was a beautiful, bright, but chilly, spring morning.

Apparently the sprinklers were on at the dog park overnight.

It was a swamp.

It didn’t bother Blue in the least, but I was a bit put off.

We had to take a long walk around the neighborhood to dry her paws off.

And my shoes.

I have to admit that these early morning jaunts are becoming a nice routine.

Although I could do without the mud.

And the chill.
