Sometimes Neologism Is The Only Thing To Do

Neologism

It’s been an incredibly mild, gorgeous February.

The ten-day forecast shows even more gorgeous weather.

Bob decided that this would be a good time to reseed the yard.

This means that we can’t let the dog out.

She’ll need several walks a day.

It won’t be a problem in the 70⁰ afternoons.

This time of year, however, it still gets cold overnight.

This morning it was 37⁰ when I walked Blue to the dog park.

I was hoping that a rousing round of fetch would warm me up.

Blue wasn’t having any of it.

She was determined to slowly and meticulously sniff every square inch of the park.

It’s a small park.

But it felt enormous as I was popsicling in the frigid morning air.

Is popsicling a word?

Yes.

It’s the gerund form of the noun popsicle.

It means, “Freezing your a$$ off while you’re waiting for your dog to painstakingly sniff every #@$#% scent in the park.”

Popsicling – yes, it’s a word.

So is neologism, which refers to making up new words.

I can’t wait for our afternoon walk, where I will bask in the warm spring sunshine.

She can take all the time she wants to sniff.

At 70⁰, I won’t care.

How To Make Flowery Language Work Effectively

Flowery language

Flowery Language

I love this quote by Gary Provost.

This passage speaks about rhythm.

But it could also apply to word choice.

So many people feel obligated to fill their stories with big, complicated words.

More often than not, however, those folks are just writing circles around themselves and running out of steam.

Big words aren’t bad.

But too many of them end up resonating like the gray-colored section.

Use your flowery language like the yellow segment.

Sparingly.

For emphasis.

Surround the magniloquence with regular words, with common expressions, and with language that will resonate.

I had to look up magniloquence.

 It means “pompous in talk.”

Yeah, that.

Don’t do it.

Read 100 Ways to Improve Your Writing by Gary Provost.

Don’t just write words, he advises, write music.

Type One Just Won The Superbowl!

Type One

The Superbowl, more often than not, is a blowout.

This year was an exception.

That game was exciting all the way to the end.

And the commercials were funny.

I’m so glad that humor is back.

For the past couple of years, the advertisers were trying too hard to be profound.

Being profound isn’t, in principle, a bad thing.

But it doesn’t go over well at a football party.

A Superbowl audience just wants to have fun.

Save that deep and meaningful content for a more serious venue.

I wasn’t rooting for either team in particular.

However, Kansas City does have Noah Gray, who is a Type One Diabetic.

As a Type One Mom, I was rooting for The Chiefs.

Woo Hoo – Type One just won the Superbowl!

Why I Love This Very Delicious Soup

Very delicious

Very Delicious

I was heartbroken to learn that Pea Soup Andersen’s in Buellton, CA has closed.

That place was iconic.

As a memorial, I’m going to make some pea soup for dinner.

I know, I know, I KNOW, pea soup looks like vomit.

I saw The Exorcist.

That pea-soup scene gave me nightmares.

A very delicious soup has gotten a very bad rap from that movie.

You would understand if you’ve ever eaten at Pea Soup Andersen’s.

I found a copycat recipe online.

We’ll have some grilled ham and cheese to go with it.

The Grown Sons will complain bitterly.

They will spend the entire dinnertime making vomit comparisons, discussing demonic possessions, and making gruesome sound effects.

But I don’t care.

We’re having pea soup for dinner.

Knowledge and Wisdom – How To Make It Happen

Knowledge and wisdom

Knowledge and Wisdom

I’m involved in several different creative workshops.

A writing group, a book club, and a speakers lab.

I love the collaboration.

Recently, at one of these workshop meetings, we discussed the paradox of knowledge and wisdom.

The subject came up during a discussion about false beliefs.

How you can think you know a thing, until you learn new facts.

And then you question everything you thought you knew.

The example was a long-term, dependable co-worker who, it turns out, had been embezzling the company all along.

It was an inspiring discussion.

We all agreed that when we were young, we were know-it-alls who knew nothing, but now that we are older, we realize that we know nothing, which is actually quite wise.

Lest I get too full of myself and my new-found wisdom, the Grown Son rolled his eyes at me over one indiscretion or another.

I don’t even know what I did to annoy him.

The list is long, and I’ve lost track.

Also, I don’t care.

Which only goes to prove my point about the paradox of knowledge and wisdom.

The Birthday Boy Is Pushing His Luck

The birthday boy

The Birthday Boy

The Grown Son had a recent birthday.

He requested a birthday-eve dinner of Chicken Cordon Bleu.

And then a birthday dinner of Tri Tip.

He got both.

The Birthday Boy mentioned, during his birthday dinner, that he would like a post-birthday dinner of chicken parm.

Hahaha, nope.

He’s pushing his luck.

I cooked two special-order birthday dinners in two days.

Now I’m done.

He’s been sufficiently celebrated.

Happy birthday, Kiddo!

The Perfect Lyrics – How To Find Your Own Voice

The perfect lyrics

Perfect Lyrics

February’s coming.

The month of love.

I recently saw a young woman swooning over a Beatles song.

“I want her everywhere. And if she’s beside me I know I need never care.”

Yes, it’s a beautiful love song.

But it was sung by a bunch of kids.

Idealistic kids who had no idea what was in store for the rest of their lives.

Now don’t get me wrong.

I still love, and admire, and respect my husband.

I still enjoy spending time with him, and he still makes me laugh.

But I’d like to see a love song about socks on the floor, falling asleep on the couch, and burnt toast.

What’s that noise, where are the scissors, and why is every single light on in the house.

We’re out of eggs, why is this sticky, and what’s the dog got in her mouth.

I’ve got nothing against romantic idealism.

It’s sweet.

But I’d like to hear a realistic love song for once.

Sung by an older person.

From the suburban trenches.

It would probably have perfect lyrics like, “Shhh, I’m on the phone,” or “Are you sitting on the remote,” or “Oops.”

Now that would be an enduring love song for the ages.

How To Be A Successful Grump

Grump

Grump What a grump.

When I told Bob that today is National Curmudgeons Day, he said, “Whatever.”

Whatever?

Seriously?

That’s a response more appropriate to National Apathy Day.

Which is not today.

He’s been a grump-in-waiting for his entire life.

“C’mon,” I encouraged him, “You’ve worked so hard for this day. Don’t let it go to waste.”

“GET OFF MY LAWN,” he snarled, brandishing his cereal spoon in rage.

It was a good try.

But the curmudgeon effect was spoiled because he was laughing.

He can try again next year.

Whatever.

Schnapsidee Is My New Favorite Word

Schnapsidee

Schnapsidee

Schnapsidee.

It’s a German word.

There’s no real English translation.

It refers to an idea conceived while drunk that seems brilliant at first, but turns out, on second thought, to be stupid.

This makes perfect sense because ‘schnapps’ is in the word.

It makes me think of the Gypsy-Rose Blanchard murder case.

She just got out of prison.

And now she’s an internet sensation.

I guess she deserves her newfound fame – she was very badly abused.

That mother had some serious schnapsidee.

From now on, whenever my kids complain about anything, I can point out this case and say that at least I never did that.

Yet.

I guess there’s still time for a little schnapsidee.

What Makes National Popcorn Day Such A Conflict?

National Popcorn Day

National Popcorn Day

Today is National Popcorn Day.

Oh, I’m so conflicted.

I love popcorn.

But popcorn doesn’t love me.

After eating it, I spend days and days and days picking shrapnel out of my gums.

It’s so painful.

I brush, I floss, I rinse.

But still, my gums are plagued.

You’d think I wouldn’t eat it, knowing how much pain I’ll be in.

But you’d think wrong.

I eat it.

And then I complain and swear I’m never going to eat it again.

Every time.

Stupid popcorn.
