Why It’s Important To Teach Your Dog To Heel

Teach Your Dog To Heel

Heel!

I’ve got Blue in a dog training class.

She’s very smart, and she’s very eager to please.

At our last session, we worked on “heel.”

One lady took her dog and left class.

She thought that this lesson was boring.

Seriously?

It’s the most fundamental thing to teach.

Once the dog learns to heel, all the other commands fall into place.

Plus, heeling makes walks more fun because the dog doesn’t pull.

It’s a huge loss if she doesn’t learn this thing.

During our dog class, a rabbit wandered by.

It was either a very stupid rabbit or a very brave rabbit.

All the dogs went nuts.

The rabbit, either very stupid or very brave, lived, thanks to the very skilled dog trainer.

It was a teachable moment.

Heel!

Such An Amazing Thing!

Such An Amazing Thing!

Such An Amazing Thing!

I have been trying to get Blue to use the doggy door.

She’s terrified of it.

I haven’t pushed the issue.

I don’t want to stress her out.

She’s only been with us a few weeks.

I do hope that she figures it out before the weather turns cold.

I’m dreading the thought of opening the door on frosty mornings.

Today she stuck her head outside and looked around.

Then she tentatively brought her front legs out.

I gave her a gentle push from behind before she could cower back inside.

She startled when the door flap bounced off her rear end.

But then she was very pleased to find herself outside.

All day long she went inside and outside and inside again.

Each time, we did a happy dance together.

What a good girl.

Such an amazing thing Blue taught herself to do today!

The Storm of the Century

The Storm of the Century

Yesterday was the Storm of the Century.

It had been hyped in the news all week.

It looked like the brunt of the storm was going to hit to the east of us.

Sure enough, by the end of the day, all we had gotten was some drizzle.

The Grown Son decided to take the dog for a walk before dinner.

While they were out, the Storm of the Century screamed alive with gusto.

Wind, thunder, lightening and an absolute deluge of rain blasted down all at once.

“Are they still out there?” The Husband asked me, shouting over the storm.

“Yep.” I hollered back.

He drove out to rescue them, and eventually returned home with everyone soaking wet.

Even The Husband, who was driving, was soaking wet.

I’m not sure how that happened.

The dog was freaked out.

She huddled in a towel, shivering, on my lap.

She’s an old girl, and not so enthusiastic about exercise on a good day.

We may never get her back on a walk again.

This morning we even had a bit of snow.

Again, the dog was not amused.

I think we have entered a new phase of Cranky Old Dog.

Thanks to the Storm of the Century.
